Tierra de Leyendas: at Home In the Southernmost City in the World

The next time you find yourself in Ushuaia, Argentina — the southernmost city in the world — about to embark on your Antarctic expedition or hike Tierra del Fuego, you’ll need a cozy place to stay. If you love cozy B&B’s, Tierra de Leyendas is your place to stay.

Located in a quiet residential neighborhood not far from the central downtown area, Tierra de Leyendas feels more like home than an upscale boutique hotel. Owners Maria and Sebastian have created their warm and inviting home-away-from-home that's easy on the environment and big on comfort and amazing views.

Our trip to Ushuaia was a long 14-hour bus ride from Chile, so we arrived downtown at the waterfront past 8:00pm. But as things happen sometimes when you travel, the best laid plans go awry.

We’d left Chile so early in the morning and never had a chance to change currency, so we planned on hitting an ATM machine in Ushuaia when we arrived.

Apparently we weren’t the only ones with this plan, as lots of other tourists walked from bank to bank in the downtown only to find they were all out of money.

No surprise really, since it was a Sunday night, in el fin del mundo.

Luckily we found a cabbie who took us to Tierra de Leyendas in exchange for our US dollars.

First Impressions of Tierra de Leyendas

From the moment we arrived at Tierra de Leyendas past 9:00pm, we were exhausted and a bit frazzled, but Maria greeted us so warmly and tried her best to understand our English rant about the long ride/machines out of cash/we're starving and need a shower!

She showed us our room, gave us time to settle in, and greeted us back in the dining room for a home-cooked dinner well past 9:30, on a Sunday night.

We dined on a well-prepared Beef Bistecca and Argentinean Lamb skewers - traditional foods of Chile and Argentina - with a bottle of smooth Patagonian Malbec to wash it all down. Delicious! Time to exhale.

We were equally impressed by their willingness to hold dinner so late for us, and the incredible meal they prepared - and it set the tone for the rest of our stay.

Your stay at Tierra de Leyendas doesn’t just include breakfast. It includes their signature homemade buffet breakfast with an incredible view overlooking the chilly waters of the Beagle Channel!

Owner Sebastian is also an amazing Chef, so you’ll start the day with a dizzying array of homemade jams, preserves, fresh breads and baked goods, fresh fruits, eggs, bacon, yogurt, and cereal. I’ve yet to see this at most 5-star hotels.

He makes so many unique and beautiful sweet treats you’ll feel like trying them all, but be patient and restrain yourself.

Breakfast pastries made with love

Breakfast is included with your stay so chances are you’ll be here a few days at least.

They also serve dinner — it’s their specialty, actually — and while you may be tempted to eat out in town during your stay, reserve at least one night if not more to dine in. You won’t be disappointed.

Booking Tours

The next morning before we headed out, we wanted to book the Penguin Tour with Piratour. Even though we had yet to make it to an ATM machine for cash, Sebastian was nevertheless happy to book the reservations for us and accepted payment when we got back later that night.

Tierra de Leyendas Accommodations

The seven suites at Tierra de Leyendas are spacious and comfortable. Our suite was a Standard room — quite spacious as you can see, with a nice big window overlooking the choppy waters of the Beagle Channel.

The Superior rooms also have a jacuzzi, Scottish shower, and hot drink amenities.

There was plenty of natural light and the warm wood tones of the room glowed as the sun came up. The queen bed was new and comfortable, closet space was plentiful, and there was an in-room safe large enough for most valuables.

The modern bath was spotless and had all the needed amenities: hair dryer, and luxury gels and lotions.

The common area on the first floor includes the Dining Room where breakfast and dinner are served, and a Living Room/gathering space with cushy furniture, board games, plenty of good books, and a computer with free internet to plan your stay or check email.

The hotel also offers fast and complimentary Wi-Fi, a huge bonus in this part of the world.

What We Liked

Comfy and Updated Accommodations

The hotel is fairly new with updated construction, and a comfortable and rustic feel to its accommodations. With just 7 suites, it's a boutique hotel that offers ultra-personal service. The owners go out of their way to help you plan your days and make your stay a relaxing one.

The Food

Without a doubt, one of the huge attractions to Tierra de Leyendas is Sebastian's exceptional cooking, from his talents as a pastry chef to his masterful preparation of my Bistecca, we can't say enough good things about the food you'll have here.

Maria and Sebastian operate a recycling and waste separation program at Tierra de Leyendas, and are actively involved in clean-up campaigns and raising awareness to guests.

Hotel Trivia

Around the hotel, at your breakfast table, and on your pillow at night you'll find little trivia factoids about Ushuaia printed in Spanish and English. It's a small thing for us culture vultures, but those little added touches add up.

Even better when they teach you about the area and improve your foreign language skills :-)

Potential Drawbacks

Away from Downtown Location

If you only have a short stay in Ushuaia or prefer to be in the middle of the action, you may want to hunker down in town. Tierra de Leyendas is located 4 km from downtown, a short cab ride or a 30 minute walk to town.

A taxi to town is about US $7. We enjoyed the quiet of this hotel and would stay here again.

Did you know? Parts of the 2016 Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Revenent were filmed in Ushuaia, when the production crew was having a hard time finding snow in North America!
